My Love Affair with The Chair

I have a thing for upholstered chairs and sofas. If I could, I would include one in every room of the house, yes, including the bathroom - ok, perhaps not in the pantry,... but then again, why not?! :-) I have fallen in love with many chairs but never has an armchair gotten my attention as much as this one:

The chair and sofa are Kingcome Sofas, and the fabric is Colefax & Fowler's Lanark Plaid. You see, I also have "a thing" for plaid - and ever since I saw this photo about a year ago that I have been dreaming about the chair and the fabric. Last Summer, on a trip to Cleveland, we went to the Ohio Design Center and I finally got to touch the fabric! It was even better than I thought! It's double-thick, 100% pure Scottish wool and it's so unbelievably soft to the touch!

Recently, a rep for Colefax & Fowler came to the interior design studio/store I work for. I immediately jumped at the opportunity and asked if I could borrow some samples of the Lanark Plaid on all the available colours. Last Monday, they arrived!

I have not been able to make up my mind on which colour, especially because we, my husband and I, have not yet decided which room this chair will go in (although most likely it will be the library), but I have managed to narrow it down to 3 colours - the beige on the top photo (right) and the two greens on the bottom photo (second and fourth). But honestly, I love the two blues as well! Ok, fine, and the bricks... But how can you not want to have a chair or a sofa in all of these colours??!

The next step was finding the chair. In the original photo (above), there is the Hamilton Chair in the moss green, and across from it, the Stratford sofa in the beige. After looking at the Kingcome Sofas website and seeing the Stratford chair, with its English roll arms, I like it better than the Hamilton and realized I had found the perfect chair!

Even though I could probably order a chair from Kingcome Sofas here in the USA, it would certainly be out of our budget at this point. The next step has been finding the closest possible chair, just as good quality and in our budget. I now seem to have narrowed it down to two options, although neither is an exact replica. Restoration Hardware has a very very similar one in overall shape, the English Roll Arm chair, but it may be too deep and it only has caster wheels on the front legs.

Duralee, on the other hand, makes a good option, with caster wheels on all four legs (I also have a thing for caster wheels...), but I am not so sure about the pleating on the top of the back, and the more proeminent curve on the bottom. Now, if only I could get Restoration Hardware's body shape and Duralee's legs and depth...!

I like the 4th green on the bottom. Those are beautiful plaids -very simple and elegant. The pleats on the Duralee chair are a bit odd. The Stratford chair is perfect!! Can you wait to buy that one...it seems like it would become one of those chairs you keep for a lifetime.

I could just curl into that beautiful top photo. Everything about that chair is perfect. We were just in Lanark last summer, and I miss it so . . .

Those fabrics are divine. Funny, I have my grandfathers old english arm chair and ottoman in storage awaiting an overhaul. I recently saw a version on the Baker website that tufts the back. I think I'm going to use as inspiration for my "Phoenix" chair.
